A Night of Fire and Stillness
There is a different kind of silence in winter.
When Lake Ruskträsket freezes and snow settles over the forest, our little island becomes a world of its own. No roads, no neighbours and no lights from the outside world. Just a small wilderness cabin, a frozen lake and the fire burning as darkness falls.
This is your invitation to spend a night there.
We meet at Wild Lapland at 16:00 and make sure you have everything you need before leaving the kennel behind. Wrapped up warmly in a snowmobile sled, you travel across the frozen landscape towards the island.
Once we arrive, there is nowhere we need to hurry.
We put on our snowshoes and head out for a walk through the winter landscape. The exact route depends on the snow, weather and what feels right for the evening. This is not about covering a certain distance. It is simply a chance to move, breathe the cold air and experience the forest as daylight disappears.
Then we return to the island.
Fire, food and an evening outside
The fire is at the heart of life on the island.
We light it outside the cabin and prepare dinner together over the open flames. There is time for coffee, conversation and simply sitting beside the fire while darkness settles over the frozen lake.
And then there is the sky.
We can never promise the Northern Lights, but out here there is very little artificial light to compete with them. If the aurora decides to appear, you are already exactly where you want to be — outside by the fire, with the frozen lake and winter forest around you.
But the evening does not depend on the Northern Lights.
There is something special about the island even when the sky remains quiet. The crackling fire, snow beneath your boots and the deep stillness of a winter night are very much part of the experience.
When the evening comes to an end, you retreat to the warmth of the cabin for the night. Your guide remains on the island, but the cabin is yours.
A quiet Arctic morning
Morning on the island has its own kind of stillness.
We light the fire again and have breakfast together before it is time to pack up and leave our little island behind.
After breakfast, we travel back across the frozen lake by snowmobile sled, returning to Wild Lapland at approximately 09:00.
Eighteen hours after we started, you are back where you began.
But hopefully, after a night of fire and stillness, the world feels just a little different.

This is a private experience, and the island is yours for the night.
We meet at Wild Lapland at 16:00. Before leaving, we make sure everyone has the clothing and equipment they need for the evening. From here, you travel comfortably in a snowmobile sled across the frozen landscape to our island on Lake Ruskträsket.
Once we arrive, we settle in and head out for an evening snowshoe hike of approximately 2 hours. How far we walk and exactly where we go depends on the weather, snow conditions and the group. There is no distance we need to achieve and nowhere we need to be at a certain time.
Back on the island, we light the fire and prepare dinner together outside. The rest of the evening is deliberately unhurried.
Eventually, you retire to the cabin for the night while your guide sleeps separately elsewhere on the island.
In the morning, we meet again for breakfast before travelling back by snowmobile sled. We normally arrive back at Wild Lapland at around 09:00.
Total duration: approximately 17 hours.

Our cabin is simple, warm and comfortable — a genuine wilderness cabin rather than a hotel in the forest.
There is no electricity and no running water.
Drinking water is brought with us to the island, and there is water and soap for washing your hands. There is no shower or indoor bathroom, and the dry toilet is located outside the cabin.
The cabin consists of one room with two bunk beds and one double bed. The lower bunks are wide enough for two people if needed. There are proper duvets, pillows and bedding, so you do not need to bring a sleeping bag.
The cabin is heated by a wood-burning stove. We keep it warm during the evening, and wet clothing can be hung up to dry overnight. When we go to bed, we let the fire slowly burn down, so the cabin will usually be cooler in the morning.
That is simply part of living in a winter cabin.
-
Your guide is with you throughout the experience and stays on the island overnight.
However, the guide does not sleep in the guest cabin. Once the evening is over, the cabin is yours and you have your own private space for the night.
We are still close by if you need us.
-
Dinner on the evening of arrival and breakfast the following morning are included.
Dinner is prepared together outside over the fire. Coffee, tea and drinking water are also included.
Please let us know about any food allergies, dietary restrictions or special dietary requirements when booking, so we can prepare accordingly.
-
Winter in Swedish Lapland can be cold, so we have extra equipment available to make your stay comfortable.
We provide:
- Warm outer jacket and trousers
- Arctic winter boots
- Large winter mittens
- Buffs and balaclavas when needed
- Headlamp
- Snowshoes
- Bedding, duvets and pillows
- Towels
- Drinking water
-
Our winter clothing is an extra protective layer to wear over your own clothes, so you still need to arrive dressed for winter.
We recommend dressing in several layers, preferably with wool closest to your body. Warm wool socks are particularly important. Avoid cotton as your innermost layer if possible, as it becomes cold when damp.
You don’t need to arrive with specialist Arctic expedition clothing. We will help you with the heavier outer layers, boots and mittens.
If you are unsure whether you have enough clothing, don’t worry. We will go through everything together before leaving for the island.
Please let us know your normal shoe and clothing sizes when booking so we can prepare suitable equipment for you.
-
You don’t need very much for one night on the island.
Bring your normal winter clothing, warm base and mid-layers, wool socks and the personal things you would normally want for an overnight stay.
There is no electricity on the island, so make sure your phone and camera are fully charged before arriving. We also recommend bringing a powerbank if you plan to use them during the evening.
And leave a little space in your bag for things you probably won’t need.
Life on the island is wonderfully simple.
